Janis Strobl, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK), joined Chlorophyll arts lab during her Erasmus-supported traineeship in summer 2026. Her practice is rooted in a material-led engagement with socio-political contexts, addressing questions of lifestyle, ecology, and environmental change. Janis works with ceramics, textiles—including tufted, hand-dyed rugs she describes as “large textile canvases”—and sound. Later this year, she will create a permanent work for Chlorophyll arts lab.
Our friendship dates back to 2016, when Janis stayed for an extended period at our previous live/work studio, ambient.space. Still undecided about her next professional steps, she was a frequent visitor to Kew Gardens and Victoria Park, and experimented creatively with flower petals while observing and questioning my investigative arts practice. It is wonderful to welcome her back later this year (date tbc) and to learn more about her work through which she examines colonial continuities, repressed histories, and power structures.
